New This Week (May 1, 2017)

I have two hopes for this week:

Thank you #EGYPT.
(Please share this message on Twitter.)

First, I hope I can make a lot of progress on lifting up the names of ALL the countries supporting the UN negotiations at the UN. (There's strength in numbers!)

You can help me by sharing the memes on these pages:

Second, I want to get as many people as possible involved in the march that -- coming up in just six weeks in New York City, on June 17! -- when the global nuclear ban negotiating session.

And an update . . . May 2: There are now thirty (30) co-sponsors on Rep. Ted Lieu's House bill to rein in presidential first use of nuclear weapons. (And four (4) co-sponsors on the corresponding bill in the Senate sponsored by Ed Markey.)

Update May 3: make that 5 senators!

Update May 4: make that 32 representatives!

Please use this script to call and get YOUR representative on that list!

MIDEAST:
Which countries are giving the green light to #nuclearban?
(Please share this message on Twitter.)

An important component in the global effort to achieve a total ban on nuclear weapons is the commitment of (most of) the countries in the Middle East.

The map reproduced above is from the ICAN Austria interactive map of countries supporting the nuclear weapons ban negotiations at the UN. The countries marked with a green dot support a nuclear ban.

The situation in the Middle East is suggestive of the larger global effort to ban nuclear weapons. Efforts for a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Mideast have been thwarted for years. Now the supporters have joined together with the global effort to ban nuclear weapons worldwide. See:

Wikipedia: Middle East nuclear weapon free zone

Wikipedia: Haifa International Conference for a WMD-Free Middle East

"Netanyahu thanks US for blocking push for Middle East nuclear arms ban."

You can help get the word out about the efforts of all these nations to bring about a world free of nuclear weapons by sharing messages like the ones below on social media (and by creating your own!).

New This Week (April 24, 2017)

I continue to be astounded about how widespread the support is for the UN negotiations on a treaty to ban nuclear weapons worldwide.

Expo 67 artwork
As I read about country after country after country that supports the ban, it reminds me of an experience from my childhood - visiting the pavilions of country after country after country at Expo 67 in Montreal.

A big focus of Expo 67 was "Man and his World." It was a moment when people were very much aware of how the human species had come to dominate the planet -- and each other -- and there were the beginnings of a call for balance.

This summer will be the 50th anniversary of Expo. I'm looking forward to going back and thinking about how the seeds of the work we are doing today on issues like climate, nuclear weapons, development, and others were planted way back then.

There are now twenty-seven (27) co-sponsors on Rep. Ted Lieu's House bill to rein in presidential first use of nuclear weapons. (And four (4) co-sponsors on the corresponding bill in the Senate sponsored by Ed Markey.)

Update April 26: Wow! Two more co-sponsors in the last day - we're now at twenty-nine (29) co-sponsors on Rep. Ted Lieu's House bill to rein in presidential first use of nuclear weapons.

133 Is a Lot of #Nuclearban-Supporting Countries

Interactive #nuclearban map from @icanaustria.
(Please share this message on Twitter.)

I recently started lifting up the names of countries that are supporting the negotiations on a global nuclear weapons ban treaty at the United Nations. (There's a complete map here.)  I've been at it for several weeks, and it's becoming clear to me: one hundred and thirty-three (133) is a lot of #nuclearban-supporting countries!

For decades, the story of nuclear weapons has been written by the handful of countries that possess those weapons, and that use them to threaten everyone else. What's different now is that all the countries that don't want the threat of nuclear weapons are taking charge.

We need to help each other garner all the strength we possibly can from this new reality.

You can help:

* Create your own messages and share them on social media.

* Join the movement by sharing #nuclearban messages daily and supporting @nuclearban.

#Nuclearban: it's bigger and stronger than anyone imagined!
