Amer Shurrab talked about that in his interview on Democracy Now:

"The tunnels have been used, until recently, until they have been practically fully destroyed by the Egyptian authorities—they have been used primarily as a commercial avenue. It has been used as a venue for trade, getting goods in and out of Gaza, or primarily into Gaza, and allowing people to get in and out of Gaza. My brother—for instance, my brother’s in-laws managed—two years ago, they managed to go to Gaza for the first time in over 30 years through one of the tunnels. That’s the only way, if all the official crossings are closed, if the Israeli government wants to put the Palestinians on a diet. An Israeli government official said, 'We are going to put the Palestinians on a diet.' They were allowing—Gisha, an Israeli human rights organization, revealed that. And they were calculating, cynically calculating, 2,000 calories per day per person of food to be allowed in, so people do not starve but just barely survive. The tunnels came and helped change some of that. The tunnels were primarily used, as I said, to let people in and out and to get everything in, from cars to gas, to construction materials. After the so-called Operation Cast Lead, tens of thousands of houses were destroyed."

http://www.democracynow.org/2014/7/28/what_do_gazans_endure_a_palestinian
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2201253179489520279.post-91698267718148918902014-08-01T19:02:49.869-07:002014-08-01T19:02:49.869-07:00Wow! This is an important reminder of the role of peace proponents, even in an era dominated by militarism.

I found this part particularly profound: "There were two drafts of what was to become Article 9, one containing provisions for maintaining military forces, the other eliminating them. What's the point of believing if the rubber doesn't meet the road? Is there any such thing as personal salvation without reaching out to others? Is compassion only a sentimental feeling? It is indeed an extremely funny movie but many of the jokes and references made in the movie could only make sense to Iranians or Farsi-Speakers that have lived inside Iran during the 90s. One of the many times I've watched this movie was with my uncle who has been living in US since 1984. He was visiting us in Iran and we watched some popular movies together and what struck me was how he didn't seem to get many of the jokes made in the movie. And he is an Iranian who has lived most of his life inside Iran and has seen Iran before and after the revolution. From what I've read I gather you're quite familiar with our culture but still many of those jokes couldn't possibly make sense to you and yet you found the movie funny.. I don't know why but this makes me really happy..
Thanks for this post and for all the efforts you and other antiwar activist put into making world a better place. It allows them to feel that they have 'done something'.

When the truth is (especially on the national level) they are simply voting for 1 of 2 sides of the same coin.

I agree with you. After having voted in every election since my 18th birthday ( I can recall being excited by finally being allowed to vote!) and yet looking back and realizing I NEVER once voted for a pres or member of congress that I supported, but rather the one I figured was the lesser of 2 evils (and being wrong about that a number of times, too) the anvil finally found my crown and I promised myself to NEVER again vote unless I'm enamored with the candidate.

I recall being told somewhere along the line that my right to vote was 'sacred'. Well then, I'll regard my vote as sacred from now on.
